Introduction Yes, you read that title correctly, this article describes how to install Visual Studio 6.0 on Windows 10. Visual Studio 6.0 is still widely used around the globe, and there is a need to provide support for legacy applications and developers who still want to use this platform.

Also, being the old timer that I am, I still like using Visual Studio 6.0 who's interface was specifically designed for C development. Sure, I admit I might be a little resistant to change, but I also find the MFC wizards are more C friendly and I like the ability to record macros which was no longer supported with newer versions of Visual Studio. I have read several articles on this subject most are good but seem to be incomplete or missing one or two key elements. I wanted to document what I have discovered through trial and error to be the best approach for installing Visual Studio 6.0 on later versions of Windows without the need for a 3rd party tool or installer. Clean Up Previous Attempts If you are reading this article, you have no doubt already attempted to install Visual Studio 6.0 on Windows 10 already and it has failed.

If this is the case you will need to do some manual cleanup first before we get started. Follow these steps to manually clean up any previous installation attempts:. Delete Installation Folders You will need to remove any installation folders from previous installation attempts, they are usually located under C: Program Files (x86) folder for 64-Bit OS and C: Program Files folder on 32-Bit OS. Note: If you have installed Visual Studio 2017 make sure you do not touch the C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 folder. And we can confirm it works 100% for VB6 Pro - with slight differences iro setup choices (e.g. Option to install Unicode is not available). Supporting VB6 is a fact of life for thousands of organizations, so this sort of help is a life-saver. BTW - we tried the 'Install Tools' that are offered on the web - and it was a disaster. So your step 1 - How to Cleanup - was a great start, and it just got better from there. One point may be useful to others - if the install doesn't complete quickly - don't wait.

Terminate, cleanup, and start again, follow the article's directions carefully. Best wishes for New Year!! Scsn 18-Oct-17 7:36 18-Oct-17 7:36 Hi I have been waiting for the ability to install and run VC v6 on Windows 10. I am running XP and now great that I can move on to windows 10. This is a great article I am able to compile and run the program in release mode, but having problems debugging the code.

I am able to build and run in debug mode, but not able to step over/into code. As soon as I try i get the error: 'unhandled exception in test.exe (OLE32.DLL):0xc000041D(no name)' I created the small project from the newly installed vsc Thanks in advance Scott. I tried opening a VB6 project last night after posting to you, but was unable to, so I turned in for the night. I just tried opening a VB6.vbp this evening, and after the IDE opens but before the project appears to load in the IDE, I get the message, 'Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015. A few seconds after that, I get 'Preparing to install.'

, and it never ends. Task Manager Apps shows 'Visual Basic (32 bit) (4)', and drilling down into that the four processes are shown - two unnamed, Microsoft Visual Basic, and Windows Installer. I can end the two unnamed processes, but trying to end Windows Installer causes the message to change to 'Canceling.' To get the entire thing to end, I have to end the 'Visual Basic (32 bit) (4)' app. I've had Visual Studio 2010, 2013 and now 2015 installed on this computer. I had previously uninstalled 2010 and 2013, but am using 2015 for a number of.NET projects.

Peter, did you ever resolve this issue? I am having the same problem. I have Windows 10 with VB6, VS2005, VS2008, VS2010, VS2012 and VS2015 installed.

The problem seemed to start after installing VS2015 Professional. I don't understand why it is trying to install VS2015 Community Edition.

In the past I have had similar issues with Microsoft installers popping up when VB6 loads, and I ran a repair on Microsoft Office and that always fixed the problem, but not this time. I have VB6 and VS2015 installed on two machines running Windows 7 and I do not have this problem.
